The Robot Drawings

“I discovered that a Roomba vacuum cleaner could be used as a drawing and painting tool. I experimented at first with various drawing tools, but they didn’t give me very satisfying results. Next, I tried scattered powdered pigments which since the vacuum is designed to pick up dust, worked much better and gave me more interesting results. Of course, the preparation of the surface is a major part of the drawing and painting process, there are various ways to program it, but mostly I let the Roomba do what it’s programmed to do from the factory. If left to its own devices, it will work over a large area so it must be confined to space the size of the canvas or paper by barriers strong enough to keep it from pushing its way out. It is like having a robot as an art assistant. It is predictably unpredictable. These paintings and drawings express my feeling of an interpretation of a kind of spherical aesthetic embracing towards a feeling of tranquility and calm.” - An extract from the original article


「今日まで絵を描くために様々な道具を試してきたが、納得のいくような結果がなかなか出ず、試行錯誤していた。そんなある時、掃除機のルンバが使えるということに気づいた。掃除機はゴミを吸いこむものであるが、先に支持体に顔料を撒き、その上にルンバを放置するとルンバは工場でプログラミングされた通りに動き回り、吸引するという機能性がかえって幸いして、良い結果が生まれた。これは想像以上の仕上がりだった。もちろん、支持体を事前に準備することはカンバスであれ、紙であれ制作工程において重要な部分を占める。ルンバ自体は大きい空間に向かって動く習性があるので、キャンバスや、紙を超えて移動しないように周りにルンバがぶつかっても倒れないようなしっかりした柵を用意しなければならなかった。こうやって仕上がった絵は私が球形*の美しさから感じる平穏感や落ち着きを迎え入れるような感覚を彷彿とさせている。」原文より抜粋

　　　 Studied painting, printmaking, photography and art history at North Texas University
1975　Studied etching at Joan Agib Studio in Vienna, Austria and painting in London
1977　Moved to New York City, worked at Robert Blackburns Printmaking Workshop and Pratt Manhattan Center
1980　Painting and art projects in private studio in Chelsea, West 26th street, New York
2014　Moved to Osaka, Japan. Currently has a studio in Minamihorie, Osaka

1956年　アメリカテキサス州生まれ
絵画、版画、写真、美術史などをノース テキサス大学で学ぶ
1975年　ウィーンのJoan Agib Studioにて銅版画、ロンドンにも渡り絵画を学ぶ
1977年　ニューヨークに移りRobert Blackburns Printmaking Workshop（版画工房）とPratt Manhattan Centerにて制作活動
1980年　ニューヨークのチェルシー地区にある私設のアトリエにて絵画制作とアートプロジェクトに取り組む
2014年　大阪に移り住み、南堀江のアトリエを拠点に活動している
